PRODUCT: Dean 'Stylist' Archtop Bass.

PRICE PAID: £450 from Macari's on Charing X Rd., but you can often see them for around £370 online. Even though I paid over the odds, I still think it was value for money.

Basses

Strings

From Basexperience (www.funkbass.co.uk)

If, like me, you get cheesed off with those expensive strings when they go dead (how much for a 6-string set of Warwick black labels? Sheesh!) - unless, of course, you enjoy that authentic Jamerson thud - then I have a good tip which is well-worn and mentioned in many places on t'internet.

So you have a cool guitar. Half the battle, right?

Wrong.

Electric instruments need to be amplified, so it necessarily follows that the amplification system is integral to the sound. What's more, because there's only so much you can do with passive microphones and EQs, but an almost infinite number of options when it comes to amplification systems, you will eventually realise that getting a cool guitar is nowhere near half the battle. Maybe not even one-third of the battle.

REHEARSAL SPACE

1. Make sure you have a rehearsal room that is at least tidy, if not clean. Untidy rooms, as well as just not being particularly nice places to be, will lead to things getting lost and damaged. Pay particular care to how your cables, instrument and power, are organised, as jumbles of both together can lead to noise issues, and being tangled up can damage an instrument cable. Moreover, you may not realise it, but that massive heap of junk piled up against the wall might be having…
